Question 1: When and Why was the Bridge Built? - Mira The construction of the Golden Gate bridge commenced on January 5, 1933, and its purpose is to connect San Francisco to Marin County across the Golden Gate Strait, which links San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. At an amazing 8981 ft. (2737 m) long, it was the worlds largest suspension until 1964, when the Verrazano - Narrows bridge opened in New York.
The idea for the bridge originated in 1872, when railroad executive and entrepreneur Charles Crocker proposed a plan and cost estimate for a bridge spanning the Golden Gate Strait to the Marin County …show more content…
There is parallel wire, wire rope stand, and eyebar. Parallel wire is made when you take thousands of wire and lay them parallel to each other. Then these wires are compressed and squeezed together, and then they are wrapped by another wire to protect them. The Golden Gate Bridge uses this type of cables. Wire rope stand cables are made of twisted wires that have already been stressed. Lastly, there are eyebar cables. An eyebar cable is made with a flat piece of metal that is circular on the end. A hole is made in this metal and pins connect all the eyebars. The Golden Gate Bridge’s construction used a total 80,000 miles of steel cables in a parallel wire …show more content…
And it took 4 years to build the Golden Gate, but with an earthquake it could take less than 60 seconds to destroy it, especially because if an earthquake epicenter hits near the bridge it could cause unrecoverable damage that could close the bridge and fall, killing several landforms traveling below. And seismic engineers believe a $175 millions retrofit is required to prevent a disaster. With advanced technology and software the landforms can simulate an earthquake effect on each part of the bridge. And then decrease the damage, or try to save lives of hundreds of people.
The landforms also added a place for tourist for observation to contemplate the view of the Golden Gate and
