First some basic facts on Gibraltar. At just under three square miles in total area, Gibraltar is a British territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula and guards the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar became a part of the Great Britain in 1703 after The War of Spanish Succession. Gibraltar’s population is 32,217 and has the 5th highest population density out of any country or territory in the world. The demographic breakdown of the territory is a bit of a melting pot. 27% of the population is British and another 26% of the population is Spanish. The rest of the population is a mix of Portuguese, Italian, and Moroccan. The population represents the different waves of immigration over the past 300 years. The official language is English, but there are a lot of people who speak Spanish. Gibraltar’s border with the North is with Southern Spain. The Rock formed began to form during the Jurassic Period with an accumulation of marine life that formed a layer of limestone. Eventually, compression along the Eurasian and African tectonic plates pushed the limestone formation up to the surface.
