The actor and comedian George Lopez was born April 23, 1961 in Mission Hills, California. “Mr. Lopez never celebrated one birthday while growing up in the San Fernando Valley.” (nytimes.com). Lopez never celebrated a birthday because he was raised by a grandmother whose own life of hardship. Biography.com says, “Abandoned by his mother, he used his painful experiences as material for his stand up comedy.” “My Mom never went to my school,” Mr. Lopez tells his wife in an episode in which the couple discover their son has dyslexia.” “She only went to my graduation to heckle me, said George Lopez.” (nytimes.com). It is pretty crazy that a guy not loved by his mother would become funny by his experiences in his childhood. Today, Lopez is an actor and a stand up comedian. George Lopez found his way into many shows on TV. Biography.com states, He made the jump to films in the 1990s with comedies such as Ski Patrol (1990) and Fatal Instinct (1993). George Lopez was one of the few Latinos to be in comedy shows. He followed the footsteps of many other actors. Biography.com also says George Lopez was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. Lopez also wrote an autobiography name “Why you Crying” published in 2004. 2005 was not a great year for George Lopez. He suffered from a genetic disorder which caused his kidneys to deteriorate. He received a kidney transplant. His wife was the doctor during the transplant. They both recovered quickly from the operation, and they became spokespeople for the National Kidney Foundation. Regarded as one of the top comedians, Lopez received several honors for his work and contributions to the Latino community. He received the 2003 Latino Spirit Award for Excellence in Television.
