On October 2003, Ed Riley, my dad rode 100 miles through Death Valley. He was 38 years old and along with 1,000 other people they were riding to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the JDRF. The JDRF, is an organization that is leading in funding for type 1 diabetes. George Hincapie who has raced in the Tour de France 17 times, won 3 US national road championships, and has competed 17 times in the Paris-Roubaix. He was the one leading the group from the East Coast.

It was 97 degrees, to prevent over heating they started riding at six o'clock and ended around twelve in the afternoon. It took a one day to ride it all and at nights they stayed in the Death Valley Ranch, the only hotel in Death Valley. At night the skies were stunning, they could see for miles and the stars lit up the dessert sand. In the morning they started riding again, every ten miles they would stop and take a few minutes to rest. This was to prevent over heating because just the day before some people overheated and had to be hospitalized.

He turned around to get the water bottle then leaned down without slowing down or getting off his bike, and picked up the water bottle. Many people cannot do that but from all of his time spend on a bike it was second nature to him. This is an unforgettable experience that will never be
