Gattaca
The phrase “There’s no gene for the human spirit,” is used in the movie Gattaca in order to convey to the audience that your DNA is not the only thing that defines you. In the movie, Vincent Freeman is known as a genetically inferior or an invalid. On the other hand, his brother is known as genetically perfect or an valid. Even though valids are genetically superior, I believe DNA is not more important in determining whether a person will be successful or not. In the beginning of the movie, Vincent and Anton played the game chicken, a game where both boys would swim as far as they could until one of the brothers becomes scared. Naturally, Anton would win since he was genetically superior

“Biotechnology is the use of an organism, or a component of an organism or other biological system, to make a product or process” (Khan Academy). In order to do this, Jerome (Vincent) would have to use Eugene’s urine, hair, blood in order to pass Gattaca’s identity tests. Although Jerome and Eugene do not look identical, Gattaca does not discriminate Jerome because they are more interested in Eugene’s genes. In the movie, the director stated, “No one exceeds their potential, it simply means that we didn't accurately gauge their potential in the first place”. The quote is ironic because Gattaca did not accept Vincent due to his heart disorder and short life expectancy, yet Jerome is one of their best …show more content…
A big issue that I have with biotechnology is in the Gattaca society, people head towards biotechnology in order for profit. This is an example of society taking biotechnology too far. I believe biotechnology should be used for curing diseases (ie. gene therapy) and not for perfecting human flaws. Since determination is not part of your DNA, you should not discriminate a person based on something they can not control. Vincent has proven that you can do anything you want to, as long as you have determination. At the end of the movie, Vincent accomplishes his dream, despite being caught, on going to

    Gattaca Vs. Society

Our society is not that different from the society depicted in Gattaca; a majority of society treats more attractive people better than average or unattractive people. According to economics Professor Daniel Hamermesh at UT Austin, “Attractive people earn an average of 3 or 4 percent more than people with below-average looks” (Stanger). In Gattaca, people are ranked in society under two categories: “valid” and “in-valid”. The naturally born “in-valids” are cast aside and relegated to working-class, menial jobs and the genetically engineered “valids” are put into powerful positions and revered in society. The protagonist of the film, Vincent Freeman, dreams of being a space pilot, a profession that “in-valids” would be strictly barred from occupying.…

In the world of Andrew Niccol’s film Gattaca, tinkering with human genetics has become the norm in the search for perfection of body and mind. The practice has become so widespread that those conceived naturally suffer discrimination on the basis of their DNA which in turn creates a class divide between the two groups. In the film genetics, and the imperfection drawn from them is overcome by means of raw determination by the protagonist and these concepts are explored through a variety of cinematic techniques utilised by Niccol, notably those exclusive to the medium such as mise en scene, soundtrack and camera angles. Niccol’s film tells the tale of Vincent, a ‘god child’, one born through natural conception with little engineering performed…

Society’s views on the inferior is crucial in shaping them as individuals with differences down to science, however their personality highlights who they are. Gattaca explores the pre-existent reputation of “invalids”, suggesting no matter what you are, society has the presumption that you are not worthy enough of a superior life. The separation casted between “valids” and “invalids”, suggests society values one’s place and purpose over an individual’s personality and qualities. Gattaca’s tagline “there’s no gene for the human spirit” contradicts the film itself, as a person's self-worth cannot be measured by their genes. However, throughout the film, the dystopian society is isolated into two groups depending on what you are.…
