When I was little, I was raised by a single mother, which meant I wouldn’t see my mother that often because she was often working. She had to maintain five children and my father was never there to help my mother out. With a salary of eight dollars an hour, my mother had barely enough money to pay for all the utilities needed at home. Due to that, my sibling and I had very few clothes and toys for us, since we were a lot of children. My mother would safe my oldest sister’s better clothes and then gave the hand-me-downs to sister that best fit in them.…

I believe that everything happens for a reason, and at the age of seventeen I have acquired many lessons, and have been thrown into the scorching sun like the prisoner in Greek philosopher, Plato’s story, Allegory of the Cave. I have been mentally, physically, emotionally, and verbally abused by the very people who were supposed to show me love, security, and affection. I have felt the feeling of loneliness, stress, and confusion; but one challenge I’ve faced, and still facing is being independent at the age of seventeen. My father was verbally and physically abusive, and left when I was four, so from then I was raised by my mother. Though she did her absolute best to raise four young children at the age of twenty-four, my mother had her own…

My humble abode can be misinterpreted as a normal household from the outline of an unbiased eye; on the contrary, from my perspective, it was a constant tornado of drama and rash actions. Both my parents were constantly in unease when I was a child, they resorted to many terms when money was short. In addition, this resulted in my many physical discipline from being spanked from the belt to the hanger to the bare hand. To add on to the negative aspects, I was a target of bullying in my Elementary years, since I was the vice-principal's daughter and I wasn't a sociable person. Furthermore, my home environment was in monotonous turmoil with my parent's fighting over my father's alcoholism and his habit to stay out late for drinks or get-together.…

Adversity took over my life, it spun me around and beat me till I could not see. It had a tremendous impact on my life, whether it was simple things like a parents separation to stressful things like ‘where am I getting this week’s bus money if I have none myself.’ Moreover, growing up with one parent made me assume responsibility for the missing parent in each picture. Nonetheless, I never let the issues at home affect me, if anything I allowed it to let me grow. I learned to be independent and take care of the house like a mother, and, I learned to take care of my own bills and be financially smart like a father.…
