As Kafka grew up, his dreams of being a writer progressed, however, his father was adamantly against them. To appease his father, Kafka studied law at the Charles Ferdinand University of Prague. Kafka struggled to find work he was passionate about in law. Despite this, he worked hard until he became his boss’ right-hand man at an insurance institute. Unfortunately, a bout of tuberculosis forced him to need to quit this job. Likewise to his work life, Kafka's social life was teemless. Kafka was a generally well liked person around his workplace, however his innumerable insecurities plagued these relationships. Twice he was engaged to marry his girlfriend Felice Bauer, nonetheless his self-detestation ruined this. In 1923 Kafka finally sets some distance between himself and his parents when he moves to Berlin, Germany with his girlfriend, Dora Dymant. Finally things seem to be looking up for Kafka, as he is free from his father's despotic presence. However, “the cold of winter in inflation ridden Germany exacerbated his disease” and Kafka succumbed to tuberculosis on June 3, 1924, (Corngold, Xii).
