Minnesota is the state of hockey and most Minnesotans play hockey, but as a kid I often sneaked away from the Edina hornets rink to go watch the figure skaters in the east arena. Aside from what people see on tv figure skating is highly competitive, and it takes just as much mental as physical strength. I started taking lessons at the age of 8, and I learned the basics quickly. I was winning most of my competitions and passing all my test levels until the summer before my junior year. At 16 I still loved figure skating and had a great passion for it, but the results on my last ‘Moves In The Field’ test were to retry. For nearly seven months I practiced and worked on passing this test level and went in front of three judges and didn't pass. A month into my junior I was persistent to balance my school, my extracurriculars, and my test and that is when I went in front of a new set of judges and failed again. I was in tears. I couldn't handle it. Finals were right around the corner, I had failed my test for the third time and I had other problems going on in my life. The one person that got me back on track was my sister. Though 900 miles away she knew exactly what to say to get me motivated. I needed to get my life together and that's exactly what I did, with her help. I eventually did pass my test on 3/18/16 and now I am a Moves In The Field Gold Medalist. Since this is an individual sport failing resulted in disappointment, but brought a whole new experience that is still impacting my life today, and that is hard work. This time of failure improved my work ethic and proved my willingness to do anything. This willingness and perseverance has helped me believe that every rough patch in my life brings many benefits that I might have overlooked
