It is rumored that in the story In Another Country, though the character remains nameless, it is Nick Adams. The similarities between Nick Adams and Hemingway were so close that it is easy to understand why people thought this. In the story, Nick Adams wounded his legs on the front lines and Hemingway wounded his legs on the front lines in real life. In Another Country placed big emphasis on the fact that Nick Adams received medals for being a wounded American, while Hemingway was also granted medals in real life for being a wounded American. This was important, as both believed that they did not earn them in a very heroic way, whereas the Italian Soldiers did. Nick was an ambulance driver, as I stated before, so was Hemingway. A second character that is similar to Hemingway is Frederic Henry in A Farewell to Arms. This story was also about Hemingway’s experiences in World War I, through the eyes of a different character. This story was about Henry, a Lieutenant in the ambulance corps in the Italian army. Both Hemingway and the character of Henry were in the ambulance corps. Henry had a lover in this story named Catherine Barkley. She was a hospital aid and met Henry while caring for him. The reason that she is mentioned is because she played a significant role in this story, whereas in most of Hemingway’s other stories, the lovers did not play as significant of a role. This book was arguably Hemingway’s most popular war story and provided a lot of insight on his war experiences.
