The article explores a comparison study on restraint related deaths (RRD) and excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) covering two time frames. The time frames used in the study were 1988-1995 and 2004-2011. Excited delirium syndrome is defined as a condition that discerns itself with symptoms such as extreme agitation, hallucinations, violent and bizarre behaviour, insensitivity to pain and feats of great strength (Mental Health Daily). The study looks at the use of restraints on people while in this state and specifically the effects on those that presented signs of ExDS.…

Introduction The following service improvement (SI) proposal is to conduct a pilot study to introduce and offer eye masks and ear plugs to service users that are being cared for on a surgical high dependency unit. (1958) Phase of Change Theory will be implemented and utilised to form a structured approach to the stages involved to successfully achieve the desired outcomes of the proposed service improvement.…
The identification of delirium is still in poor state and is the major cause of the fatalities to the older people in the ICU. One of the major reasons for the lack of proper identification mechanism is that there is poor knowledge exchange and education for the registered nurses and other medical staff. It has been observed that knowledgeable nurses who understand delirium and have enough knowledge on identification of delirium are better placed to handle the identification of delirium. The knowledgeable nurses understand the need to have the right information on the need to have identification of delirium. While there are many educational models that have been developed for identifying and managing delirium in patient, there is little focus…
Every sound and every note has a specific color and sometimes shape. Listening to music creates wondrous seas of vivid color dancing across the field of vision, purple blobs pulsing and dissipating, and waves of green cresting and crashing above a deep blue ocean of melodies. Synesthesia is a neurological condition, or gift, that affects 2-5% of the general population. Although synesthesia is not a new discovery, there are still many mysteries as to where the gene is located and how synesthesia is inherited. Many tests are available to diagnose synesthesia, but no two cases are the…
A large controversy is patients suffering from dementia. Do they know what they are asking for and are these temporary thoughts from their diagnosis? Throughout the United States, lowering the drinking age is a huge discussion. Every American enjoys a drink or two with a friend as a social event. Why does the government feel a person who can be in the military isn’t mature enough to have a drink? Binge drinking is a huge issue among young adults who are not able to drink in a public place. Prohibiting these young adults from drinking will not make them stay away from alcohol.…
The rationale for the use of patient’s diaries in ICU is that ICU survivors have little memories and frequently delirious memories from their ICU stay. The experienced memory gap is associated with an increased risk of psychological morbidity. The aim of the ICU diaries is to help fill this memory gap. ICU patient diaries are an historical and chronologic account of events in ICU from the perception of those who complete them, usually nursing staff and family members (Ewens, Hendricks and Sundin,…

In 1998, a nursing shortage began due to the confluence of several factors that were, at the time, unknown. The lack of nurses is becoming apparent and putting out negative effects for the world to see through the registered nurses habits in caring for these patients. Hospital administrators suggested higher wages and increased training for nurses; however, efforts to provide these did not end the shortage. The controversy here is higher wages cannot make up for being intensely overworked, causing severe exhaustion and job dissatisfaction…but some people are still trying to increase wages without reducing workload. Because many aspects of society are affected, the nursing shortage has become a concern among hospital administrators.…
