Cosmetology, the study and application of beauty. A cosmetologist is a person who helps their clients to acquire a certain look that can change their exterior self-image. Cosmetologists are experts in all things beauty. These beauty specialists are well known for their hair and makeup artistry, and are also skilled in improving the health and beauty of skin and nails. Cosmetology is the broadest and most encompassing of all salon professionals, as it involves working with makeup, skin, hair, and nails. In the United States, cosmetologists have to be licensed in order to apply their oriented skills. However, each State has different requirements in the national licensing exam. Pursuing education beyond a certificate or diploma program is commonplace in this industry, as there is also a host of associate and bachelor degree programs in such areas as salon and spa management or cosmetology instruction. All states boards of cosmetology have minimum requirements for licensure. “Many states list a minimum age for the license applicant, ranging from 16 - 18 years old. A number of states specify minimum schooling requirements that vary from eighth grade to high school graduation or obtainment of a GED certificate prior to cosmetology schooling. A few states require applicants to take a 4-hour in-service training program in HIV/AIDS before they can apply for a license” (Jackson 272). Each state has a different minimum age requirement, which vary from sixteen to eighteen years old, based on the Journal of Labor Research students will also be required to have a high school graduation diploma or a GED in order to be able to take the National Cosmetology exam. Some states require continuing education hours to renew your beauty license, some require taking a safety and sanitation quiz to renew, and others simply require the license renewal fee. “Your license will renew every two years, with a renewal fee of $50. No continuing education is required to renew a practitioner’s license. However, if you wish to upgrade your license to a Master Cosmetologist, there are some requirements you must fulfill.” (Cosmetology Licensing). In the state of Mississippi, it is required a fee of $50 in order to renew a cosmetology license and if the person in interested on ,in that state. Some states have what's called "reciprocity" with other states, or a mutual arrangement that allows licensees to transfer with ease. This is often an option when two states have substantially similar or equivalent licensing requirements. Some states simply require an application and a transfer fee, whereas others may require you to take more training hours or sit for the new state's board
