Copper dates back almost ten thousand years and has been a common metal used all over the globe from past to present time. It’s unclear who originally made the discovery of copper, but historians have recorded that Egyptians noted their use of copper in their ancient symbols and hieroglyphics. However, copper’s …show more content…
Copper can be found in almost everywhere, areas such as the Troodos Mountains, near the Mediterranean Sea, Michigan, Mexico, Indonesia, Alaska, Chili, etc. Like many other metals, copper doesn’t comes completely pure from a mine and must be refined for it’s purest value. It comes from ores, which are mined rocks rich in metals such as copper, gold, iron, and also lead. These rocks can go through various extraction methods and processes to separate the waste rock from the useful metals; methods such as smelting, milling, leaching, and electrolytic refining. Two of the strongest methods of refinement is electrolytic refining and leaching where copper is refined to 99.9% of its pure substance. This pure element has a reddish tone, doesn’t rust like some metals, and weighs about 63.55 g/mol. It’s quite well known for it’s superb conductivity and it is universally used. Silver wins over copper in conductivity, for silver is the best conductor, however copper is used instead because it is less expensive. Also, copper is an excellent metal for bending and shaping and is easily malleable. You’ll be surprised to know how much copper really is used in the world and in the United States. Infact, copper is in …show more content…
An interesting development has been in progress with the effect of copper and the possible new types of treatment in cancer. With make tests undergone, chemists and other cancer studying scientists have discovered that the element copper binds well with the body’s DNA with the element phosphate. With the copper bonded, it has the ability to terminate infected cancer cells and also keep them from reproducing. The use of copper instead of other cancer cell killing medications, such as Cisplatin, has been claimed to be a safer and more successful alternative. Something as natural and simple as an element used in the human body could have the potential to make profound solutions and healing effects. Also, in a study it was found that with a very small dose of copper in the human body can promote stimulation of the brain and boosts a child’s learning ability. In a young classroom setting, a class of kindergarteners a few students were tested with the small dose of copper while the rest did not. The few that were assigned the dose of copper showed signs of improved attention and work ethic
