Coeliac disease, also known as celiac disease, is chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine. This disease causes people’s immune systems to react abnormally to gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, oats, barley, and rye. Upon exposure to gluten, villi that line the bowel become flattened and inflamed, which is known as villous atrophy. Due to villous atrophy, the surface area of the bowl gets reduced which results in various malabsorptive and gastrointestinal symptoms.
