What is coal made of? Coal is made of energy that was stored in giant plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago from swamps even before dinosaurs. When these giant plants died they formed layers at the bottom of the swamps.

Where does coal come from? Coal is one of the three major forms of fossil fuels, oil and natural gas are the other two forms. All three were formed hundred many hundreds of millions years ago. The age coal was made is called “The Carboniferous Period”
