Coal Energy There are many different types of energy sources that are used in different countries across the world. One of these energy sources is coal. Coal provides as much a ⅓ of the entire world's energy. Coal also produces 30% of US energy. Coal is not, however, used in Idaho. Idaho does generate coal electricity but this energy is sold to neighboring states like Utah and California. There are many things about coal worth knowing especially if you plan to build a large power plant and are trying to decide what energy to use. Coal forms over millions of years making it a fossil fuel. This chemical substance is then mined and burned to produces thermal energy. In things like steam engines, this coal is used to heat the water in a tank. The pressure from the steam makes the pistons the wheels turn which is mechanical energy, and this motion moves the entire train. In other cases, the same process is repeated but instead of turning pistons, the steam turns turbines to produce electrical energy. Coal can also be used to make coal coke or just ‘coke’. This coke is used in the smelting of iron and steel ore and also produces less pollutants than regular coal …show more content…
Coal releases 42% of the worlds mercury pollutants. This can harm the human body by damaging the digestive tract and the immune system. Should this pollutant enter the body of an animal, it makes this animal unsafe to eat for both humans and other animals. Sulfur that is released reacts with oxygen in the air to form sulfur oxide. Sulfur oxide has been linked with things like causing asthma, bronchitis, and acid rain. Nitrogen produces fuses with oxygen in the air to form nitrous oxide has similar effects to sulfur oxide. Nitrous oxide can irritate asthma or considerably worsen it. It can even cause influenza or pneumonia. Other pollutants released by burning coal are arsenic, cadmium, selenium, Carbon Monoxide and other toxic heavy

I think we should keep TMI(Three Mile Island) because the positives outweigh the cons. In my opinion, keeping TMI would be a good idea because of the amount of energy it can produce. If they closed TMI then a lot of people would lose their jobs. TMI produces emission free energy unlike coal or other fuels. If TMI closes, then Pennsylvania's main source of energy would be coal or propane which is very bad for the air.…

Why would you choose to mine THIS for a power resource? Why would you choose something that destroys ecosystems and pollutes the air over a cleaner energy source like wind power, solar power or hydroelectric power? Imagine you’re walking past a giant open field, would you rather see a black dusty machine filled smoky hole in the earth or a nice row of pretty white wind mills and solar panels on the houses? Not only does the second choice look better, but it doesn’t leave much of an impact, but coal does (a very huge impact).…

The coal mine is an example forced labor by the district, the capital makes it so the only way someone could survive in the districts is too do the only job available to them, a coal miner. This only makes the capital richer because they pay the miners a very low income based on how much they mine and how much they work. Also the miners are looked upon as “lowlifes” as they don’t have much of a career choice for them, and they look dirty and unhealthy by the people of the capitol. This could be shown on page 5 “Men and women with hunched shoulders, swollen knuckles, many who have long since stopped trying to scrub the coal dust out of their broken nails, the lines of their sunken faces.” This shows that miners both feel, and are worthless and…

Thesis: Our energy comes predominantly from fossil fuels because of it’s supposed inexpensiveness. However, the cost of fossil fuels in terms of human lives is often ignored. Nuclear power, on the other hand, is a much safer alternative because it results in fewer deaths per unit of energy produced than coal and natural gas. By comparing their outputs in terms of energy produced per unit of fuel consumed, and comparing that with the amount of byproducts produced as well as the amount of deaths associated with both energy sources we can analyse their relative harmfulness.…

Carbon monoxide is well known for causing global warming, but there are other byproducts that are equally as bad. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists there are “two oxides of nitrogen--nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide--are formed in combustion” (Air Pollution). Nitrogen oxides can appear as a yellowish brown clouds hovering over many cities. They have been found to cause irritated lungs, bronchitis, and pneumonia.…
