Gabrielle Bonheur “CoCo” Chanel was a famous French designer and entrepreneur. She created a turning point in the fashion industry for women worldwide. She designed clothes that had never been seen before. She also extended her designing beyond clothing. Chanel began to sell handbags, jewelry, and perfumes. She is best known for her determination, aspiration, and spirit which she used toward her professional life and social life. Gabrielle Chanel was born August 19, 1883 in Saumur Maine-et-Loire, France to Eugénie Jeanne Devolle and Albert Chanel. Her parents were not married at the time of Gabrielle’s birth but married a year later. At the age of 12, Gabrielle’s mother became ill with bronchitis, which soon took her life. The father sent their two sons to work while he sent their three daughters to a local orphanage. Gabrielle was raised by nuns who taught her a great deal of things, and one of these just happened to be sewing. At a young …show more content…
At twenty-three years old, Gabrielle and Étienne got married. A few years after their marriage, Chanel began to have an affair with one of her husband’s friends, Captain Arthur Edward Capel. Capel paid for Chanel to live in an apartment and for her first few shops. Both of these men were a big part of Chanel’s beginning to success. Later on she started adding stores in Deauville and Biarritz and began making clothes. Chanel’s first clothing success was a dress she made out of an old jersey. She received many compliments on the dress and when people would ask her where she bought it she would offer to make them one.
