CANAVAN DISEASE Canavan Disease (or Canavan-Van Bogaert-Bertrand disease) is a rare inherited disorder that damages the ability of nerve cells (neurons) in the brain to send and receive messages. This condition is autosomal recessive, which means both copies of the gene in each cell have the mutation. The parents of a person with an autosomal recessive condition each carry one copy of the mutated gene, but they don't express having the genes. This disease affects the ability to walk, talk, and sometimes even see. It is most commonly found in the Ashkenazi Jew population. Although symptoms sometimes do not show until 3-5 months of age, the symptoms of the disease usually range from abnormal posture

Cells containing abnormal Notch 3 receptor proteins results in disrupted normal functionality and ultimately leads to apoptosis of these cells. As the name of CADASIL suggests, it is an autosomal dominant inherited disease. This means that either parent needs to pass down a copy of the mutated gene to their offspring in order for them to develop CADASIL Disease. Underlying Gene Locus…

In people with MD, though, these genes have wrong information or leave out important information, so the body can't make these proteins properly. Most kids with MD have Duchenne MD. Kids with Duchenne MD look and act just like other kids when they're babies. But when they're between 2 and 6 years old, the muscles in their arms, legs, and pelvis (hips) begin to get weaker. The first signs of weakness might be trouble with running, going up the stairs, or getting up off of the floor.…

Adrenoleukodystrophy also known as ALD is a genetic disease. This is a brain disorder where the myelin in the brain gets destroyed and one will have an unusual amount of saturated fatty acids. When the myelin gets destroyed the neurons in the brain start to stop telling the central nervous system what to do. At first a person will show behavior changes but as the disease progresses the symptoms become worse; causing people to become blind, deaf, experience weight loss, have seizures, and even lose the control over their muscles. A very well know case of this was shown in the movie…

Blepharophimosis is a congenital condition caused because of a genetic disorder and affects the eyelid development. This malformation of the eyelid is characterised by three main conditions namely Blepharophimosis, Ptosis, and Epicanthus Inversus Syndrme (BPES). The treatment is started at an early age to reduce the aftermaths of these conditions since vision problems usually occur because of blepharophimosis. As per many studies conducted over the years, this condition is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern in which the mutated gene from either or both of the parents gives rise to this problem.…

Dr. Canavan studied the pathology of diseases affecting the optic nerve, the spleen, the brain, and the spinal cord, and examined cases of sudden death, multiple sclerosis, and of microscopic hemorrhage. She always sought to discover the pathological basis of different diseases and bodily defects, and defects of the brain were of special interest to her. Her most famous accomplishment came in 1931 when she published a paper she had co-written with a colleague that described the condition now known as "Canavan's Disease. " The paper discussed the case of a young child who had died at only sixteen months of age, and whose brain had a soft, spongy section that had turned white. Canavan was the first to diagnose the disease pattern for this degenerative…
