Research Paper On Cabeza De Vaca

On June 17, 1527, Cabeza de Vaca and nearly 500 men set sail for the New World. He did not return to Spain until 1537, one of only four men from the entire expedition to survive storms, sickness, famine, attacks from Native Americans, and the stupid decisions of his captain, Narváez. Some boats sank or crashed on the shore of East Texas, and the undernourished crews, without resources or food were either drowned, slaughtered by Indians, or reduced to cannibalism before dying of exposure.

One thing that caught my eye was the book on Lourie’s following of the trail of Cabeza De Vaca. I found it intriguing because I thought it to be a lot like the well known Homer books Illiad and the Odyssey. To me, the description of On the Trail of Cabeza De Vaca seemed similar to that of Homer’s books. A man, Cabeza De Vaca, set sail to near Mexico, which was like Odysseus journeying to Troy; but in Cabeza De Vaca’s case he was venturing to the Mexico area in order to colonize, conquer, and possibly find gold, while Odysseus was traveling in order to defeat Troy. Also too, both Odysseus and De Vaca were gone for about ten years.…

Niccolò Machiavelli and Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca went through different experiences that led them to have their own perspectives in human nature and create their ideals for good governance. The simple fact that Cabeza de Vaca was unfortunate enough to have a hard time throughout the expedition made him more open minded about human nature, while Machiavelli had a set idea of what human nature was and how it ties to good governance. Machiavelli's view on human nature is the same as what is a good governance a good leader and a good human being is someone who knows how to be respected and feared without being hated and how that leads to have the people the Prince governs happy and on his side. Cabeza de Vaca has a more down to earth view on human nature but that differs…

The reason for this sudden urge to look for a trade route again was because news had spread that the voyage of Bartolomeu Dias had found that the Atlantic and Indian Oceans were directly connected. Da Gama was the navigator chosen to lead the fleet by Dom Manuel. It was on July 8 of 1497 that Da Gama had set sail with a fleet of 4 ships and a crew of around 165 men to find a new route. This was Vasco Da Gama’s first voyage set solely for exploration and the result completely opened up the maritime trade routes of Europe and Asia. The second voyage was a follow up expedition that had been set to further explore the new found route and to sign a treaty so the Portuguese could open a factory in the newly found land, but this time Da Gama did not lead the expedition, as it was Pedro Alvares Cabral chosen to lead.…
