This movement has shed a light on a serious problem that hinders America from progressing. The movement has shown that “[w]hen we say Black Lives Matter, we are talking about the ways in which black people have been deprived of their basic human rights and dignity” (Southern Illinois University). Most people believe that the movement is to look down upon other races or to shame police officers, but “[t]his movement is not about vilifying the police, but allowing for another position at the table of influence” (Southern Illinois University). The Black Lives Matter movement is promoted because receiving news that “more police have been charged with fatal shootings in 2015 than any other decade” is shocking and very detrimental to our society (Jackson). America should not be labeled with such facts, but they should look for ways to improve and move past such harmful acts. Joann Jeannot shares that the “BLM [movement] aims to address injustices that are affecting black people in the US”. This can be seen similar to the Civil Rights movement, which shows history repeating itself. Our nation should come together as one and do away with this sickening behavior. If “differences do not lead to disparities” we should be at peace with one another (Berrios- Thomas). The color of our skin should no longer be a factor that affects how people get treated in the United States. The Black Lives Matter movement is not out to harm people of other races, but “it is our job to actively engage in movements to support people of color and work to end oppression”
