Initially, the Cosbys managed to maintain their financial stability, but their monetary situation started to deteriorate when Cosby's father, William Cosby Sr., developed a severe drinking problem. Following his father's enlistment in the U.S. Navy, Cosby assumed a parental role for his siblings. Cosby's mom, Anna, was a housekeeper.
