Bend It Like Beckham
Gurinder Chadha, director, author, and producer of Bend It Like Beckham (2002), focuses on sports named soccer. In this popular movie, she also shows British and Indian culture and their lifestyles. According to Graham, the title refers to David Beckham, the star of the Manchester United soccer team, the husband of one of the Spice Girls, and his ability to bend the ball. The title is metaphorical and the main character of the movie bends the rules to find a balance between soccer and her parents.
The story is set in a London suburban area. Jesminder Bhamra (Parminder Nagra), known as “Jess” comes from a traditional Indian family. Her parents are Sikhs and they fled from Uganda to London. Family, friends, and relatives become busy in the preparation of wedding. But Jess sneaks out to play and practice soccer every time. As a climax in the story, this situation worsens when Jess has to decide and choose between her passion and her family. Interestingly, her older sister’s wedding day and the most important game of her summer season are at the same time. Her father knows her passion for soccer and lets her go to play the final league when her family, friends, and relatives celebrate her sister’s wedding. Her team wins the league championship. Jess and Jules earn scholarships to attend Santa Clara University in California. Jess is not the only girl on the team facing problems with her parents. Jules has also problems with her parents, especially, her mother. Jules’s mother is concerned about her daughter’s interest. She wants her to be and look more female. Jules spends her entire time with Jess and other girls on the team. This makes her mother feel that she is a
