Author and Mother to an autistic child Elaine Hall once said “They say it takes a village to raise a child. I think it takes a child with autism or other special needs to raise the consciousness of a village”. Autism is a multi-faceted and unique disorder that affects the behavior, communicative functions, civil interactions and brain development. There have been many advancements and changes to the description of the disorder and how it influences those afflicted and those around them. Autism is a very common disorder whose history, symptoms, causes, and treatments need to be better understood in a world where the measure of the disorder seems to be escalating.

Some of those believed causes include rubella during pregnancy, tuberous sclerosis, fragile x syndrome, or encephalitis. Other anomalies such as non-classified mutated or changed genes are also reasons that some researchers believe to cause autism. Rubella, also known as German measles, is a disease that is only harmful to the unborn baby present in the mother that is infected with German measles. Rubella may affect the mother in a way similar to a cold would or be present with mild flu-like symptoms. Rubella is bad because if this is passed to the baby, she baby has a chance of being born with birth defects. Another issue with rubella could be either miscarriages or babies that are stillborn. Another issue that researchers believe could potentially lead to autism is tuberous sclerosis. Tuberous sclerosis is a genetic disorder that could either be inherited from you parents or developed by a spontaneous gene mutation. This medical problem causes non-cancerous tumors to begin to form on the vital organs of the sick child. For example, tumors may form on the heart, brain, liver, kidney, or in the lungs. Although these tumors are not cancerous, they are still a large problem because should some of these tumors form on the brain, they could lead to seizures and other medical issues that would seek immediate attention. Also known as Martin Bell syndrome, this medical condition is an inherited disease that mainly affects the development of the person who has it. Commonly affecting males more severely, speech and language is most often delayed by the age of two (GENETICS HOME REFERENCE). Accompanying Martin Bell syndrome could be hyperactive disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD for short. Encephalitis is another medical issue that could possibly lead to autism. This could lead into the autism spectrum disorder because encephalitis is the inflammation of the brain. A common cause for encephalitis could be something as simple as a common cold, but a common cold that carries the bacteria that leads to encephalitis. This issue starts out by showing flu-like systems, but progress into brain swelling, which could lead to a stroke. Scientists believe that this could be a precursor to autism because most cases of autism have shown signs of brain
