Santirocco, author of “Justice in Sophocles’ Antigone,” states, “ [Antigone and Creon are a lot alike] both are isolated, both are stubborn, both respond to others, including those who love them, in the same imperious way, and both doom themself and others by their actions. The greatest similarity, though, lies in their pursuit of justice” (186). Antigone knows from the beginning what her morals are, which are steering her actions. She felt she was on the side of justice for what she did, and leaving her brother out to rot in her eyes was unjust. Antigone knew the punishment that lied ahead, but because her love and relationship with her brother was strong she was unconcerned of the consequence.…

In addition, Laws are important and should protect the rights of the citizens, not hinder or threaten their morals and freedom. In this sense, Creon’s laws are considered insensitive, cruel, and unjust. Therefore, I am more in favor and sympathetic of Antigone’s decision to go against Creon’s law to bury her brother, because I feel that she stood up courageously not only to defend her family, but for human rights. She did what she felt was right, while all the other citizens including her sister Ismene, followed his laws blindly with fear. Despite her pride, I feel that Antigone did not commit a crime deemed to be punishable by death.…

Antigone actions against her uncle, King Creon 's edict, for burying her brother come from her religious beliefs in the laws of the gods being above all else and her inclination to protect and care for her family. Opposedly, King Creon 's actions stem from a need to maintain political stability in the kingdom of Thebes which has just suffered a trauma in the civil war between Polyneices and Eteocles, Antigone 's brothers. Though initially Antigone exhibits signs of wanting to die for her pure belief in her principles of the gods and her loyalty to her family, her desire transcends into an obsession for martyrdom fueled by a great sense of pride. Her incessant desire for death characterizes her as more of an narcissist than a pure martyr;…
