Julie Zhuo’s essay, Where Anonymity Breeds Contempt, does not effectively reach content providers because of Zhuo’s lack of consideration to the provider’s own experiences on the topic of trolling. Throughout her essay she argues that content providers need to take control over trolling by not allowing anonymous commenters, watching over comments, and asking users to report trolls. By following these steps, Zhuo believes that trolling will decrease. Trolling is when someone makes hateful or rude comments online- usually anonymously. Lone Wolf’s early life experiences took place within the Native community that had few material resources, and little economic or political control, due to a militaristic federal government imposed program that attempted to indoctrinate American Indians. Beginning in the 1870s, the federal government implemented institutionalized education as a strategy of assimilation. The intent of boarding schools was to force American Indian youths to become United States citizens by removing them from their Native culture. During Lone Wolf’s childhood, the program was implemented across the country, and many public schools barred or discouraged American Indian children from attending. Deep, dark secrets are not an aspect of life that came to age with 21st century technology. However, through the modern medium of the World Wide Web, there has been a new cultural phenomenon called “PostSecret,” which provides people a window to anonymously share their secrets. This phenomenon began in 2005 when Frank Warren initiated an art project that welcomed people to anonymously mail him their secrets on postcards. Since 2005, on every Sunday Warren has released new batches of secrets so that the PostSecret Community is able to go online and view other people’s secrets. While I argue that this community does not have a finite amount of community members, there is clear evidence of its great following.…
