Imagine now that you did not know what was ahead of you in this new land or how you would survive the journey. The only information you have is a promise from God that He will take care of you and protect you from harm. This example demonstrates how much faith Abraham has in God and His promises. Continuing with Abraham’s journey of faith, Abraham arrives at Shechem where God appears to him and tells him of one promise, “To your offspring I will give this land,” (Genesis 12: 6-7) accordingly, Abraham builds an altar to thank God for this blessing. From there Abraham travels toward the hills east of Bethel, to Negev, to Egypt, back to Negev, and stops in Bethel. During this journey, Abraham and Lot had become very wealthy with livestock, silver, and gold except the land could not support both of them and their livestock. Abraham, upon the instruction of God told Lot to choose which land he wanted and said to him, “If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” (Genesis 13: 9) Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was like a garden, a region of great fertility with thick vegetation, filled with wildlife and surrounding cities.
