Significantly, Phoenix Jackson’s mature age stands out the most throughout the story. In the beginning of the story, the author does not explain exactly why Jackson is going to town, but later the author reveals her reason. Once she arrives to town she goes to a clinic where one of the nurses says, "She doesn't come for herself-she has a little grandson. She makes these trips just as regular as clockwork" (392). Old Phoenix takes these long journeys into town every year to retrieve her little grandson’s medicine. She knows that she is old and that her old age will create obstacles, but she puts all of her adversities to the side in order to take care of her
