A Worn Path Eudora Welty, the author of “A Worn Path,” implements ways to put her past life and experiences into her stories. Eudora Welty was born in the great Jackson, Mississippi on April 13, 1909, and died July 22, 2001. She attended Mississippi State College for Women, University of Wisconsin, and Columbia University School of Business. Similarly, her excellent writing skills and past life in Mississippi become apparent in her short story "A Worn Path." For example, the story takes place in Natchez, Mississippi on the Natchez Trail. The short story is about an old Negro woman named Phoenix Jackson that is traveling a long distance by foot and faces different obstacles in order to receive medicine for her grandson. Despite Phoenix Jackson’s old age, she remains determined and selfless throughout her journey into town.
Significantly, Phoenix Jackson’s mature age stands out the most throughout the story. All through the story, the author directly states that the main character is elderly and infers that the journey will have some challenges due to her old age. “She was very old and small and she walked slowly in the dark pine shadows, moving a little from side to side in her steps…” (387). In the beginning of the story, the author does not explain exactly why Jackson is going to town, but later the author reveals her reason. Once she arrives to town she goes to a clinic where one of the nurses says, "She doesn't come for herself-she has a little grandson. She makes these trips just as regular as clockwork" (392). Old Phoenix takes these long journeys into town every year to retrieve her little grandson’s medicine. She knows that she is old and that her old age will create obstacles, but she puts all of her adversities to the side in order to take care of her
