The alternative music of the 80’s has been a large part of my family’s culture and how I was raised. Whenever we were in the car, alternative music from my mother’s teenage years was played, bringing my family closer. It created an immense influence on the music I listen to today and is a part of my family’s culture. Considering how much influence it had on my family, I wondered what has influenced the music itself and the influence alternative music has had as a whole? While interviewing my mother, I found that the alternative music of the 80’s, preferably “The Smiths” and “The Cure”, have had a large impact upon her childhood. Also, it has influenced the alternative music that is prevalent today. For example, my mother feels as though "the alternative music of the 80’s has created the pathway upon which [she] paved [her] future, and it allowed [her] to figure out who [she] really was when [she] was a teenager." This music inspired not only my mother to become the artist she is today, but it also inspired many others in finding who they truly are. The lyrics provided a deep meaning and understanding, which allowed for other bands to do the same and for people to use such lyrics to become the person they are today. For instance, "The Smiths" "provided a guitar-based alternative to the synth-pop sounds of so many other eighties U.K. bands, paving the way for the nineties Brit-pop explosion, and the Smiths’ distinct LPs are still studied by millions of sensitive types all over the world” (“The Smiths Biography”). Also, "the unmistakable sound of The Cure’s gloomy post-punk pop gave rise to Goth rock, but also, Smith’s masterful orchestration balanced his punk roots with pop sensibilities and tipped the band into the mainstream, making it one of the most important bands to come out of- and survive- the 80’s” (Lopez, Korina). Nowadays, the sounds and lyric style of these 80's alternative bands can be heard within the alternative music of today, such as the songs "Riptide" by Vance Joy and "Ophelia" by the Lumineers, which both incorporate deep lyrics with upbeat sounds. Thus, one can conclude that the alternative music of the 80's had an influence that marked the beginning of a new style of music, which is still seen within that of modern music and people's lives
