What would you do if your body was lit on fire while on your way home from school? Sasha, an 18-year-old agender student, would know what that's like. Richard, a schoolboy from Oakland, California, set fire to Sasha's skirt because she was dressed in feminine clothing. This happened on the 57 bus while on their way home from school. The crimes that Richard committed were never just a joke and should never have been taken as one.Richard wasn't clueless in his actions towards Sasha and knew what he wanted to do. Richard was less than 2 years away from being an adult. In the 57 bus, Richard should have been tried as an adult because of the severity of the multiple crimes he committed.

They kept saying “light skinned girl.” “Hey! light skinned girl!” to Sahsha while they were asleep. As they yelled Sasha stayed asleep, Richard flicked the lighter for the fourth time and the boys started running and yelling “Back door!” “Back door!” so they could make their escape. Richard jumped off, heard Sashas scream, stopped, then turned back around and decided to go back. Richard committed multiple hate crimes in addition to his other charges. "Each charge also contained a hate-crime clause that would increase Richard's sentence by an additional one to three years in state prison" (Slater 160) Richard got more years added on to his sentence because of his discrimination towards sasha. Richard had no impulse control and wasn't thinking through what he was doing. Once Jamal told Richard to “do it” he did. As soon as the boys saw Sasha on the bus, they decided to mess with her. Richard didn't stop to think about what the repercussions would be, or how this would affect his and Sasha's lives forever. Richard was 16, close enough to 18. At 16 you are legally allowed to get your driver's license and operate a car. That's a lot of responsibility and a very adult step in your life. 16. It is when you get your first job, open a bank account, or get to go out by yourself. “Juveniles who have committed serious crimes are often considered high risk to reoffend, and many believe that trying them as adults will reduce this risk and protect the public from future harm.” (Rodgers) Richard only being 16 when this happened shows that if he was able to commit these crimes at 16 imagine what he could do when he turns 18. Richard being able to commit such an act of violence shows that if he is able to do it now, he won't hesitate to do it again later. Richard was old enough to know right from wrong, but chose wrong. Richard was 16 when he chose to light Sashas skirt on fire. From a biological standpoint, children begin to develop their sense of right and wrong from an early age, but the part of the brain that controls rational thought doesn’t fully develop until 25. That being said, most children should have a basic moral code (which they learn from their parents) around age five. Richard was at least 11 years into knowing his moral compass, but steered in the wrong direction. Richard knowingly chose to do what he did, and even admitted to doing so.
