School Uniforms: Intellectual Growth Or Expression?

Intellectual Growth or Expression Everyone has seen “back to school” commercials which seem to encourage students to dress by the most current trends and to wear name brand attire. The “back to school” commercials imply that by wearing certain clothes, students are self-expressing. In certain places, “self-expressing” is acceptable, but in educational institutions students, should be dressed appropriately to the occasion. Requiring school uniforms is a way to prepare students for future proper occasions. Although many people believe that self-expression is repressed, school uniforms should be used in schools because they relieve parents and caregivers of the monetary distress, enhance academic focus, and school safety. This makes life impossible for staff and instructors to know the whole student body, which bring concerned parents to question: “how can instructors and staff tell apart student body from intruders?” Implementing school uniforms ameliorates school safety by making it strenuous for intruders to blend in with the student body. Trespassers are easier to identify. According to the research directed by the (NAESP) school uniforms had a 62% favorable impact on school safety and a 67% increase in student attentiveness. Among those safety concerns, is gang activity which can be a vast issue. Not only does gang activity interfere with school safety but also interferes with academic development. Uniforms eliminate gang colors. Gang activity impedes students to focus on their academic studies and break out violence amongst the student body. Parents and students claim that implementing school uniforms is unconstitutional. By requiring school uniforms a student’s freedom of expression is taken away, “suppressing their identity and individuality” (“School Uniforms”). Opposes also believe that school uniforms are gender biased meaning females are not allowed to wear slacks and must wear dresses or skirts. However, the positive impact school uniforms have made in institutions of education, are greater than the one who have not adopted the uniforms, outweighs the few claim of individually infringement. (NAESP) Females are required to were trousers for physical education classes and by doing this, it discards the gender bias claim.
