“[John Proctor] I’ve heard you to be a sensible man, Mr. Hale. I hope you’ll leave some of it in Salem” (154). John Proctor has never met nor seen this man before, but everyone knows what he does and what he has done. Which makes it easy to gain everyone’s trust and for people to believe what he has to say. Francis runs into the Proctor house scared out of his mind because they took his wife away for suspicion of witchcraft, “[Hale] Believe me, Mr. Nurse, if Rebecca Nurse be tainted, then nothing’s left to stop the whole green world from burning” (170). Rebecca Nurse is known as probably the most god abiding and perfect Christian women out there. It was very shocking news to hear about her being charged with witchcraft is unthinkable. Which causes John Proctor and Hale to believe that these accusations are false and are made without reason. Reverend Hale is a very god abiding person and he is left to deal with the feelings of confusion and false hope because perfect, kind hearts are being treating with the upmost disrespect and being charged as being unholy while the ones who are doing the accusing are the real devil
