Reproductive Health Care Availability and Controversial Policies
Reproductive health care services that are provided by government funding is a highly debated topic among citizens and policy makers alike. Providing reproductive health care services through government funded agencies has been argued for and against, based on the benefits to the social welfare of the population, and the allocation of government funding. Will defunding Planned Parenthood save government funding and prevent abortions from being performed while upholding the rights of individuals to choose where they receive reproductive health care services? Legislation to limit and cut funding may prevent services from being performed, but does not effectively address the moral or ethical issues inherent in the legislation proposed to defund agencies that provide abortion services. Without the initial advocacy for birth control, there wouldn’t be the current debate about how birth control is funded or where it is accessible. The change in mindset of women’s roles during the turn of the century lead to the acceptance of using birth control to allow women greater control over their livelihood. Examples of historical cases for birth control usage explain that it was due to financial hardships in regards to childcare.
An example of the many signs that birth control was here to stay was the publicity given to two 1916 court cases, one in New York City and one in Cleveland, in which women accused of theft were released by sympathetic judges.
