Reproduction Rate Of Fruit Flies

Improved Essays
An interesting idea for a biology experiment would be conducting tests on the reproduction rate of fruit flies exposed or unexposed to radiation. I believe fruit flies that have been exposed will have a lower reproduction rate versus those that have not. To prove my theory, I will assemble three groups of fruit flies; Group A will experience no radiation. Group B will experience a little radiation and Group C will experience a lot of radiation. I will be using three Mason jars with small holes poked in the top to allow fresh air for the ten flies I will encase in each of them. I will also add equal amounts of fruit to each jar for their food necessities. Then I will use my dad’s x-ray machine he has at his work for the radiation blasts. After

As a group we have taken two sterile plastic vials and placed a cup of Drosophila medium powder into each one. After adding a cup of the medium with added half a cup of distillated water into the plastic vial, which allowed the medium to dissolve into it. We allowed a few minutes for the media to be absorbed and afterwards we applied a cotton plug to close the entrance to the vial. Anesthetizing the Drosophila flies In the lab, we had the fruit flies already asleep in a green bucket filled all the way up with ice.…

During the experiment, several materials were needed to perform the experiment with ease. Ten crickets were needed and were provided by the teacher of the class. A clear container, including a lid, was also needed to contain the crickets. As well as crickets and a container, the lab required a working computer, with the Logger-Pro application already downloaded onto the computer. Many different devices, such as a carbon dioxide sensor and incubator, were needed to obtain the results of the experiment.…

The fruit flies does deal with dominant vs. recessive for the wing traits. Complete dominance occurs when the dominant allele complete cover (hide) the recessive allele. This occurs to the wing traits in the fruit flies. Normal wings are dominant over vestigial wing and base on the data, the female that carries the vestigial wing did not create any F1 generation of vestigial traits. This occurs because the male has normal wing so when the two parent meet; the dominant normal wing in the male completely cover up the recessive vestigial wing in the female traits.…

They pollinate over $14 billion worth of crops each year (Ballaro and Warhol). With that amount of money you could buy almost 15 new Viking stadiums each year. They are so valuable to our society and if the bee population goes down, the human population will soon follow. Although many people are unaware of the shrinking bee population, scientific evidence has proven it to be a major problem.…

rine shrimp have been on this planet for almost 600,000 years. Their eggs can stay alive for years without being put in water because the eggs are covered in a dry cyst. Brine shrimp can live in a minimum of 1-2% and a maximum of 25% salt, that’s why they are easily found in places like the Great Salt Lakes over in Utah. Brine shrimp tend to be more active and drawn to strong bright light. When Brine shrimp are fully grown they, will have molted about 15 times and their length will only be about 1.3 centimeters.…

For this experiment my hypothesis was correct. The control petri dish germinated nine out of ten radish seeds, and the acid rain petri dish germinated zero out of ten radish seeds. For the second experiment, I said in my hypothesis was that both sets of plants, that were given the acid rain solutions, would underperform compared to the control; and the set of plants given the acid rain solution with a pH of three would underperform the control, as well as, the set of plants given and acid rain solution with a pH of five. For this experiment my hypothesis was half correct. Group B, with the acid rain solution with a pH of three, underperformed both group C, with the acid rain solution with a pH of five, and group A, the control.…

For this lab we conducted a population genetics study on the frequency of wild and apterous flies within a small population of fruit flies. The fruit fly Drosophila works well for genetic and evolutionary geared studies because they have a relatively short generation time but are intricate enough to reveal some biological principles that are parallel to many different kinds of eukaryotic organisms. When exposed to artificial selection in laboratory experiments, fruit flies have experienced dramatic changes behavioral and evolutionary traits within ten generations or less (Goldsmith, 1991). It is important to note that wild flies have wings and apterous flies do not. The purpose of artificial selection is for humans to modify species over generations by intentionally breeding two organisms with the objective of acquiring a specific trait.…

Abstract This experiment is about the effect of microwave radiation exposure on the percent that radish seeds germinate. The hypothesis in this experiment is if the radish seed is placed in the microwave for 8 minutes, then the percent of germinated seeds would be the lowest out of all the times. This experiment is important because if something happens and radish seeds are exposed to microwave radiation people would be able to know if the radishes would germinate if they knew the time they were exposed. This could also be used to find out if people could grow radishes in space because there is a lot of microwave radiation.…

This review article describes how the mating decision of Drosophila fruit flies is dependent of first the male’s choice to mate and then the female’s choice to accept or reject the male. The article simplifies the mating by the neurobiology behind the male’s choice and then the female’s choice. Furthermore, the article describes how males rely on chemical signals to detect suitable courtship objects and distinguish female flies from males. According to the article, males courtship is based on pheromone detection which then elicits courtship singing. The neurobiology behind male pheromone detection and processing including how the chemical compound of the pheromone interacts with specific odorant receptors in the brain of male fruit flies is…
