Representing The Poor

Poverty is the state of being poor (Merriam-Webster.com). It has been increasing throughout the years. Many individuals like myself don’t get offended when we are classified as being poor. When I say I am poor, it doesn’t mean that my family and I don’t have a roof over our heads to bring us shelter, but what I mean is that we sometimes don’t have money to pay the rent and bills that come with it. I’ve always had the dream to attend a good college/university to accomplish what I’ve set up for myself. Wealthy people try and make other's feel less valued than them because they look down to say no one is better than them even at school. Matt O’ Brien states on his online article, Poor Kids Who Do Everything Right, Don’t Do Better than Rich Kids Who Don’t do Everything Wrong, “Rich students are increasingly entering kindergarten much better prepared to succeed in school than middle class students”(Brien, 3). It is clear that hooks is correct. In a lot of soap operas and movies, the poor are made to be seen as someone who is worthless and they are seen as criminals, when most of them aren’t. In the soap operas that I have came across and seen, I can say that I agree with bell as she says, “It seems as if what they were trying to do was to make the poor not feel good about themselves (bell hooks, 485). Although these entertainment pastimes aren’t made to be seen as something that goes on in real life, they do have real people in them. Poor individuals do get hurt; they get hurt because say that once one of them has had a bad day and they come home to watch soap operas, movie or a show, but they (t.v entertainment) portray the poor as worthless criminals who are working in a huge house with wealthy families; making them for something to think
