Characters that may seem to add diversity might actually just be background or secondary characters. In most cases these characters weren’t needed at all they were simply added in for variety. The sudden rush of representation in recent years is due to the countless years that it has been absent. The pleas for representative heroes has been building up for quite a while. What is being seen now is the dam finally beginning to burst. This need for representation is not exclusive to comics, it is in fact spread out over multiple media formats such as T.V. and movies. Similar to all other media formats comic books are tied to the trends of the larger culture and often they adapt to the changing social conditions of society (Russell). The world now has become one that is open about the differences between people so it’s no wonder that comics would mirror this.
