Another argument readers have against the new representative characters is that they feel that the sudden rush of diversity is forced and insincere. There are some under the impression that the new diverse characters are simply a gimmick of sorts. The addition of these characters and the altering of iconic characters is a marketing tactic and not the progressive movement that many believe it to be. These characters exist for scandals and controversies to draw attention back to comics and ultimately increase sales. Similarly, the addition of dissimilar characters into popular works is simply a way to show inclusion.
Characters that may seem to add diversity might actually just be background or secondary characters. In most cases these characters weren’t needed at all they were simply added in for variety. Underrepresented readers come in believing that they’re finally getting the representation they deserve but really they’re being given a character who is simply being used for their diverse aspects. The sudden rush of representation in recent years is due to the countless years that it has been absent. The pleas for representative heroes has been building up for quite a while. What is being seen now is the dam finally beginning to burst. This need for representation is not exclusive to comics, it is in fact spread out over multiple media formats such as T.V. and movies. Similar to all other media formats comic books are tied to the trends of the larger culture and often they adapt to the changing social conditions of society (Russell). The world now has become one that is open about the differences between people so it’s no wonder that comics would mirror this.
