The great depression started when the stock market crashed in October 29th, 1929 and ended in the year 1939. Nine thousand banks failed as a result of the crash, James Braddock was still in the middle of his professional boxing career when the market crashed. Crime was very high in these areas and because of the unemployment there weren't many police to stop the crimes being committed. They were named after the president Herbert Hoover during that time period, citizens greatly blamed him for the offering little to no help during the stock market crash. Most Hoovervilles were built near water for a convenient water source, Hoovervilles were often raided by police officials or park departments to clear out any socialist or communist ideologies that were rising in hoovervilles at the time. Most hoovervilles were not the same, with some hosting a couple hundred to areas like Washington D.C. and New York having hoovervilles with populations in the thousands. The longest lasting hooverville was in St. Louis, Missouri from 1932 to 194. In “Cinderella Man” hoovervilles are shown when James’ friend Mike Wilson goes inside a hooverville, a riot breaks out and Mike is killed. The high rate of unemployment caused people living in hoovervilles to go to a relief office to apply for financial
