It a massive collection of poems that have been handed down orally for centuries. It is not, however, as voluminous as the Mahabharata, which is the largest collection of poems in all of recorded human history. The Mahabharata and Ramayana were used extensively for the creation of later theatrical work. Moreover, the tradition of theatre merely begins with these ancient texts and continues to expand throughout time. One of the oldest texts directly devoted to the arts is the Natya Shastra, written between 200 BCE and 200 CE by Bharata. The Natya Shastra is comprised of 36 chapters that distinctly cover all aspects of dramatic performance and analysis.
