Set shortly after the civil war and the start of the great depression in the small fictional town of Maycomb County, To Kill a Mockingbird depicts the struggles of the Finch family as their reputation is bruised and battered for defending a black man in a still racially prejudiced court of law. The Finch family must overcome challenging obstacles through this rough period but in doing so they evolve as people. The antiquity of this book falsely makes it seem as if modern day adolescents will struggle to identify with the characters, despite this, the journey of adolescents throughout the novel such as the ever-evolving Jem Finch give an insight into the importance of building character for both adolescents in the past and present. Jem Finch…

He shows this by coming out of his house no matter if he is caught by Nathan Radley. The first example of this is during Miss Maudie’s house fire. During the house fire everone was gathered around Miss Maudie’s house as it was being put out while Jem and Scout were out in the distance watching, Scout was getting cold standing outside for too long and did not notice a blanket being put on her by Boo. He risked himself being caught and possibly punished by Nathan in order to help a young girl that is starting to freeze in the cold. Another example that shows his courage is when he hid gifts in the tree’s knothole outside of his house.…

This quote is right after they found Dill hiding under a bed and Jem and Scout were reacting to it. Rather than going along with some scheme like earlier in the story, Jem tells Dill that his mother would be worried and tells Atticus. This shows courage, because instead of following his friends, he follows his own judgement and does the right thing. This also shows that Jem is indeed maturing and doing what he thinks is the most moral thing. I predict that Jem will continue growing up and will do the right thing throughout the rest of the story, and I believe this because Jem as slowly been developing already.…

He has also realized that Boo Radley may like living alone more than with the wicked men and women of Maycomb. I relate to this passage because, as the only child, I spend time alone with myself as well. To Kill a Mockingbird - "Naw, Jem, I think there's just one kind of Folk. Folks."…

Although physical and mental courage can be associated together, it takes moral courage to do what is right as opposed to what is wrong. Throughout the rumours that were said about Boo Radley, his strong sense of morality and justice motivated him to defend Jem and Scout by Bob Ewell. With determination, and giving it all he had, he attacked Mr. Ewell, thus leading to his death and the safety of the children. Boo did not defend the children in hopes to gain a better reputation of himself, but rather did it because he felt it was the right thing to do. Although Boo did not say anything to anybody or claim that he was the one who protected Jem and Scout from potential harm, his actions remained a secret to Jem and Scout only.…
