Film Repentance Analysis

For Part two of the final exam, I chose to watch clip 2. For clip 2, the name of the Film is called “Repentance”. Repentance is directed by Tengiz Ablaze. The primary character that is shown throughout the clip is Abel Aravidze. It is also important to note that another character popped up at the end of the scene. This character was named Varlem Aravidze, which is the name of the mayor who died in the beginning of the film. Throughout the clip, there were numerous different technical components that were displayed. The first technical component that was displayed was the use of diegetic sound. This is when there is sound coming from a source that is from a known area within the shot. In the film it showed Soviet superiority as the Soviets in the film beat the Germans in the war quite easily. With that said, a theme that I can say Fall of Berlin had was the theme of Soviet Superiority and the theme of nationalism. For the Soviet superiority theme, this is shown because countless times throughout the film it showed the Soviets beating the Germans without any issue at all. The film also showed how Hitler and the Germans were nervous thus showing the impacts of Soviet superiority. In addition, the ending of the film supports the Soviet Superiority theme as well because it shows the Soviets conquering and taking full control of the city of Berlin. For the theme of nationalism, the film showed this by portraying everyone in the film to be for the war and doing whatever it takes to win the war. Also, everyone praised Stalin as a great leader as well and gave full credit to him for winning the war.
