The Moche civilization occupied the Northern region of Peru before the Incas. In 2011, the Museum of New Mexico repatriated a gold Moche monkey head to the government of Peru with the help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), specifically the FBI Art Crime Team, the Department of Justice Office of International Affairs, and the New Mexico Attorney General. It is clear that a country’s government has to be accommodating in order for repatriation to proceed. The 2011 U.S. Attorney Charles M. Oberly III stated that “Artifacts like this Moche monkey head represent the history not only of the source country, in this case Peru, but the history of all mankind. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) acquired three Casta Paintings in 2011 by Juan Patricio Morlete Ruiz, a Mexican painter of the eighteenth century. LACMA possesses additional Casta Paintings created by Miguel Cabrera and unknown painters. LACMA is not the only museum with a history of acquiring Casta Paintings without opposition. The only full set of sixteen Casta Paintings resides in the Mayer Collection at the Denver Art Museum. However, the DAM’s collection of Cast Paintings was created by Francisco Clapera, a Spanish painter. While the skill and artistry of the Casta Paintings are indeed incredible, their time in LACMA’s and the DAM’s collection suggests that Mexico does not desire them.
