Reoccurring Theme Of Death In Antigone

Improved Essays
One of the main characters I decided to recreate was Antigone. She first appears on page 1068 of the prologue and appears back again on page 1082 of scene two. In overall, one of the play’s reoccurring theme is death. I chose to draw a mainly black puzzle into one part of Antigone’s face to show the foreshadowing of Antigone’s own death and how death had been a part of her for so long. On page 1072, Antigone says, “I am not afraid of the danger; if it means death,
It will not be the worst of deaths—death without honor.” This specific quote was what inspired the black puzzle on her face. Antigone own persona was what inspired the hearts around her face for two reasons. The hearts showcase her love for family and the color red symbolizes her

It tells the moment that Death came and what lead her to her fate. In the poem, Antigone is communicating from beyond the grave, describing her journey with Death, personified, from life to afterlife. Antigone refused to accept the edicts made by her uncle, the king; she takes on the role quite differently from that of the other more passive women of her time. A woman like no other, she reveals a romantic infatuation with the non-living and turns her rebellion of the King into a noble cause.…

I have come to a reasonable conclusion that Antigone is directly a round character. In the beginning of the story, she is shown to have both many strengths and weaknesses. As our primary protagonist, she has shown to have a heroic nature, she even stood up against her uncle who is the king. She is also willing to not disgrace her brother's memory by not giving his body a proper burial, she is willing to put her life on the line to do so. However, despite being a strong woman at nature, she has shown to have her own weaknesses as well.…

And even if I die in the act, that death will be a glory. (63) Antigone knows that death is her punishment she is getting by disobeying the laws of gods, yet she is not afraid of it. She shows braveness in her decision to bury Polynices even it is against the will of people and the laws of gods. She firmly believes that her death will be glorious because she is burying her own brother just like a martyr will die for her strong ideals.…

It takes a lot of confidence to be a pioneer and push the limits. Sometimes, the outcome is poor. Although, sometimes the outcome is great and makes the struggle worth it. The novel “Antigone” by Sophocles features a character, Antigone herself, who is bold and will do whatever it takes to get justice. Similar to this, “Fahrenheit 451” presents a character who is also willing to make sacrifices to get justice, not just for one person but for a whole society.…

The classic tragedy of Antigone allows readers to follow the tragic destiny of Antigone, the ill-fated daughter of Oedipus. Throughout Antigone female gender roles are constantly spoken of in contradictory ways, posing a powerful debate about what it means to be a female. The Greek tragedy of Antigone presents a battle of opinions on traditional female gender roles; Creon supports the traditional female gender roles through his demeaning view and words he expresses towards women, which is contrasted by Antigone’s strong actions of bravery and her quest for freedom from the chains of grief as well as Ismene’s transition of ideology on how women should behave. The debate of female gender roles presented proves to be important due to the fact…

The whole city knows that Antigone is going to marry the king’s son, Haemon, and after she is sentenced to death, the city of Thebes knew how tragic her life has become. Antigone qualifies as a tragic hero because she is not entirely good or bad. Antigone’s negative side is shown when she broke the king’s decree and went to bury Polyneices. Her positive side is seen when she claims Polyneices’s right to be buried in a religious way so that his soul can rest in serenity in the eternal life. Antigone also shows her optimistic side when she tries to defend Ismene after Creons’ guard caught her.…

How exactly should “the good life” be defined? That is an extremely difficult question to answer because everyone has a different view of what he or she considers to be the good life as well as what he or she believe that life should be constituted of. It is essential to remember and to take into consideration that people are raised in different societies and each of those societies have unique moral standards that they are expected to follow if they want to be considered to lead a good life. Over the course of history in Western civilization, literary protagonists and philosophers alike have sought out how they believe the good life should be defined and some of their conceptions deviate from the accepted social norms in their respective societies…

The quote “There is nothing that you can say that I should wish to hear” shows this. Antigone is clearly determined to bury her brother; she is so blinded by her stubbornness and determination that she refuses to listen to what Creon has to say. “There is nothing that you can say” expresses this message clearly. Also, the tone in which she speaks is a challenging one, which may suggest that she is not afraid of him. She has her mind set on doing something and nothing nor no one will change her…

Initially, Antigone’s actions are clearly motivated by a drive to fulfill her moral responsibility. She is responsible for the burial of her brother and responsible to die for his honor. Antigone explains this when she makes the statement, “Even if I were a scullery maid and heard the edict proclaimed while I was in the middle of doing washing up, I’d still have dried my hands, walked out into the street still in my apron, and gone to bury my brother.” She is extraordinarily stubborn and strong willed toward reaching her ultimate goal and fate of death. At this point in the play, she believes dying is going to be the beautiful and glorifying fulfillment of her “responsibility” to honor her brother’s death.…
