pieces as she processed everything. Louise Mallard is the woman of this short story in “The Story of an
Hour” by Kate Chopin. Sadly, shortly after obtaining her true joy of freedom, Louise suddenly loses

As Louise releases and relaxes from her life, she gazes outside through an open window.
Light bursts from the sky, and she sees patches of blue sky. The sky seems to call to her, “But she felt
it, creeping out of the sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the
air” (Chopin 235). The light that was once covered becomes uncovered. Likewise, the darkness that
once covered Louise gets removed and there is a new light within her. Additionally, this light does not
come from just anywhere. It comes from the west as the short story depicts (Chopin 234). This scene
symbolizes the end of Louise’s tough marriage, just like the end of a day. A new hope comes alive due
to the picture of the end. Louise had shuddered the day before at the thought of life potentially being
long. Now, however, she prays for life to be long, because of her newfound hope (Chopin 235).
Furthermore, the window is a symbol of pure freedom, amplifying the wish for freedom theme.
