The liquid portion of petroleum is called crude oil or simply oil. This oil is used to make gasoline and diesel chemical compounds. The gasoline is used to fuel light vehicles while diesel fuels heavy duty ones. The gaseous portion is called natural gas. Natural gas is used to heat houses and fuel certain devices like dryers and certain stoves/ovens. Petroleum is gathered from spongy porous rock in the earth 's crust. Techniques to access petroleum are drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Drilling is primarily used when petroleum pockets can be specifically located. Drills drill into the earth to siphon the gases and liquids of petroleum. Hydraulic fracturing, also called fracking for short, is used for splitting tough rock full of petroleum. Fracking is a step ahead of drilling in terms of speed and production, but has greater defects. High pressure streams of water, corrosive chemicals, and sand are used (Kelly 17). These elements work together to crack massive portions of land and allow petroleum to be siphoned out through the crevices. Fracking is the primary way to gather petroleum today. In the US this is done in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico …show more content…
It is primarily created by factories. Laws were put in place to prevent this, but companies still secretly do this because all they care about is money. Heated water is the byproduct of coolants for machinery. This water is dumped into bodies of water. This foreign temperature disrupts aquatic life. All organisms such as fish and plants are affected. Then this indirectly affects the surrounding ecosystems dependent on the waters for food. Thermal pollution causes a chain reaction within ecosystems that can only be stopped by mankind itself and the enforcement of
