The idea of wind energy has been around since before the 1850’s however, the first person to put this idea of wind energy into effect was Charles F. Brush. Bush was the first to create an electricity producing turbine in Ohio (1888), although primitive it was very innovative and this was the spark to multiple generations of renewable energy growth (especially wind) in the United States. With Bush’s invention in mind many people started to devise wind turbines of their own. The Idea of wind energy grew largely in the early 1940s circa World War II where the largest wind turbine began to operate on a Vermont hilltop, this wind turbine was used to feed electric power to the local utility network for several months during World War II. This is a large step as this wind turbine was the first to produce megawatts of energy (a unit of power equal to one million watts, …show more content…
Wind turbines are environmentally friendly and leave little to no harm on the environment. All sources of renewable energy provide little to no harm on the environment as it reduces the carbon footprint that is produced with other types of non-renewable energy. Many of the environmental problems that America faces today stem from our excessive use of fossil fuels and the dependence we have towards it. The impacts of these fossil fuels include global warming, air quality deterioration, oil spills, and acid rain. Wind Energy may be good for the environment but it still has to look towards nature and the toll it takes on it. Wind turbines have to watch for bat and bird migration routes, fortunately however, the California government has made adjustments in location of wind farms to avoid possible migration patterns. From a different perspective and on a human scale, in a study conducted by Alec N. Salt, stated that wind turbines have been known to cause problems with infrasound, although inaudible it does not go unnoticed. Infrasound has been known to cause symptoms such as sleeping problems and headaches, although it may not seem favorable, it takes a significant amount of it to place this type of toll along the
