History of the Renaissance
You have probably heard a lot about the Renaissance. It seems to be a prominent event in history. But what does Renaissance mean? Renaissance is French for “rebirth”. People use this term to describe the 14th to the 16th century. The Renaissance was happening after the medieval times. The medieval period just basically means that gap between classic and modern times. It was seen as a rediscovery of rational civilization that was very heavily focused on art. You can’t really create a line between the medieval times and the Renaissance. This is because art gradually turned into the style of the Renaissance. In Florence, Petrarch makes an influential convert to the cause of classical studies. Boccaccio visits Petrarch. Boccaccio admires Petrarch a lot. He has written a biography of Petrarch before meeting him. Boccaccio meeting Petrarch changes his life. Boccaccio was in the middle of writing the “Decameron”. Little did he know, this would make him famous in the future. After he completes writing this, he completely leaves Italian literature. He goes to Latin and is venturing off to find original manuscripts of classical texts. However, Boccaccio isn’t the only follower of Petrarch doing the same thing. We are now in the years of 1411 through 1430. Three Florentine friends get recognized and become the founders of the Renaissance. One of themis named Brunelleschi. He is an architect. Another is Donatello. He is a sculptor. And finally, Masaccio is a painter. They have a pretty large age gap. Let’s focus on Brunelleschi first. He was the first to come up with the idea of putting a Renaissance spin to art. When he and other humanists take a trip to Rome, he quickly notes details like dimensions and sketches of the ruins he and other humanists had found. You may be wondering, why is he doing all of this? He is doing all of this because he wants leave the medieval heritage. Brunelleschi showing interest to this classical architecture leads to him being the first to create a “scientific theory of perspective”. When Brunelleschi takes more trips to Rome, he has to have someone be with him. Donatello is the one to stay with the man on his trips to Rome to study the style of the old buildings and ruins. Some people do not believe that Donatello went with Brunelleschi to Rome but Donatello did sculpt some sculptures in a classical
