They are a middle-class family because of Giulio’s success as a banker, a business inherited from his father. She is arranged to marry 32-year-old Duke Filippo Sforza of Milan.
My name is Giovanna Cellini I am 15 years old and the eldest of three children. I have two brothers, Cosimo and Giorgio. Tomorrow I marry Duke Filippo Sforza. My family had to come up with quite a dowry to arrange this marriage. I would never do anything to jeopardize my father’s business ventures.
Filippo is from a noble family and I am lucky to marry him; however, I am nervous since he is more than twice my age. I would never tell my family this because it would offend them. My thoughts and opinions should not be voiced if they differ from my fathers. It is considered offensive and an undesirable quality in a woman.

It is better than going to live with my uncle or a convent, since a single woman cannot live alone. My father arranged this marriage to secure the growing wealth of his banks. He is planning on opening another branch of his bank in Milan and could use the support of the Sforza’s.
I know that my role after I am married is to bear children, raise them and take care of the household. I will not work and due to my future husband’s social status. I will have servants and a very comfortable life. I must maintain my appearance so I do not bring shame upon the Cellini or Sforza families. I will probably be a young widow since my husband is twice my age. When he dies I will then re-marry to create new ally for my family and to secure our social

I think you may want to reconsider the wedding between your daughter and the Duke. After my time in his home I’m not entirely certain that he is the right choice. Before the dinner commenced he showed me a painting that he had commissioned of his last Duchess. It was beautifully painted by Fra Pandolf however how he spoke of the Duchess only worried me for the future of your daughter. He was very appreciative of his former wife, imploring me to stare at the painting with him, yet the way he described the painting, “as if she were alive” and “the depth and passion of its earnest glance” made me wonder if he’s over his last Duchess and ready to move and commit to your daughter.…

Ismat Chughtai, born in 1915 in Badayun, spent most of her life in the Northern part of India. Being one of the most eminent Muslim women writers she used her pen as a weapon to bring the evils of patriarchy that were customary at that time. Being herself the woman of the time when Indian society was to a great extent orthodox which rarely allows women to come out of her veils, Chughtai dared to challenge them by giving a whole new definition to women rights as well as women sexuality. Her (almost all) writings deal with problems related to women. “Woman.. woman.. woman.. very good, loyal ,disloyal, this and that, and god knows what else”(Naqvi 36)…
