The period that came right after the Middle Ages was known as the Renaissance. According to Mr.Dowling, “ The Renaissance was the birth place of modern history”. During the Renaissance Europe saw a plethora of values come back to life from Rome and Greece . New technologies were developed like the Printing Press. People wanted to know so much about the world around them so they sailed away on ships and new continents were discovered. Art was especially big during this time period as well. The Renaissance started in Italy where everything was surrounded by culture. Because trade was so amazing during this time period, this made many merchant families very wealthy. He was a jack of all trades and he absolutely loved science. According to the editors at History.com, that is why most people called him a true man of the Renaissance. Leonardo was born in Tuscany to his parents Caterina and Ser Periro. His mother and Father were never married and shortly after Da Vinci was born his Mother began a new life with a new man. Growing up, Leonardo only received very minor educational training in the subjects of reading, writing, and math. When he was 15 years old a sculptor took young Leonardo under his wing which helped him learn more and more about his artistic abilities. By the time he was 20 years old he successfully became a master artist and he was able to have his own studio. By the time it got to 1478, Leonardo was commissioned for a piece done by himself for an alter piece inside of Palazzo Vecchio. After that, Leonardo was also asked to create a painting of “ Adoration of the Magi”. He had some reasons of leaving the city and never finished either piece. In 1482 he was also brought on to create a silver lyre as a gesture of forgiveness and peace from Lorenzo de Medici to Ludovico. Leonardo did such a great job with this commission that De’ Medici hired him as an engineer. A major decline was starting to happen because of the discover of the New Americas. People stopped most funding towards the arts because of needing more money to explore the Americas more. Also the Spanish army also began taking over. According to Ewhelan, Italy became a battle ground for the first time in centuries when the French came over to take over Naples. The Spanish had taken over the majority of control over Italy, which sadly made artists not be able to express themselves. Overall the Renaissance was an amazing time period filled with amazing new art and new experiences. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “ learning never exhausts the mind”. If looking at the Renaissance in a whole, this quote is very true because of how progress people made during that time period.
