The story “ the lesson “ is written by Toni Cade Bambara. The story talks about a group of kids who are taken on a field trip to F.A.O, where they meet Miss moore who teaches them a valuable lesson about life at that time. She teaches them how there is an inequality between them and white people when it comes to wealth and privileges. She shows them different prices of items in the store. Firstly she says” one unusual aspect in a story of this brevity is the number of characters included. Miss Moore brings eight children to the store, and all of these children have a different perspective on the events of the day”. Rena Korb is trying to say that the author added too much characters in this type of story. She does have a have piont. If you bring eight different people with you somewhere they will all at the end of the day have a different perspective of the events that happened. Toni Cade Bambara's point of view is trying to show a kid's point of view about the inequalities of kids between different races and could have done a better job if she had less characters. It's hard for readers to get where each of the kids are coming from so less kids or characters would mean and be a better interpretation for us. Rena Korb also mentions the difference between Mercedes and the other kids in the story.” For instance she is the only child who has a desk at home”. Toni Cade Bambara is trying to show that each kid is different and has a different background and upbringing. Rena Korb disagrees with it and says that part is unnecessary and is unimportant to the essay. I kinda believe it is important because out of all the kids in the story she is the only child who has a desk at home. This is very important to Toni Cade Bambara point in the story she is trying to teach the kids of inequality and you can see in the story there is because only one kid has a desk. Toni Cade Bambara grew up in the same time as the story she wrote she is pretty much comparing it to her life as a kid growing up in the projects of Harlem New
