Remus: The Genius

When Remus came to he realized that for the first time in months he wasn’t wet or cold or covered in something foul. He found himself lying on a sofa aching like hell probably due to a recent fight, but he looked around and from the pictures on the side table to the Gryffindor flag strung across the kitchen, to the motorcycle magazines on the island in front of him, everything screamed Sirius to him. Sirius was living here, in a flat, with actual stuff, with things to keep him grounded to the times in school, to happy memories, he probably had James and Lily visiting with Harry, he could talk to James every day, he wouldn’t have the Order questioning his loyalties because he could be trusted, because he wasn’t a monster. She was one of those pretty and charming girls born, as if by an error of fate, into a family of clerks. She had no dowry, no expectations, no means of becoming known, understood, loved or wedded by a man of wealth and distinction; and so she let herself be married to a minor official at the Ministry of Education. She dressed plainly because she had never been able to afford anything better, but she was as unhappy as if she had once been wealthy. Women don't belong to a caste or class; their beauty, grace, and natural charm take the place of birth and family. Natural delicacy, instinctive elegance and a quick wit determine their place in society, and make the daughters of commoners the equals of the very finest ladies.…

Reflection on: “‘They Never Did Me Any Good’: Welfare-To-Work Programs From the Vantage Point of Poor Women”. The article first provided an overview of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconsolidation Act (PRWORA), and described it as a governmental attempt to reduce the dependency on welfare. In class we have discussed the Welfare-to-Workfare programs, which creates precarious jobs—underpaid, temporary, with little to no benefits.…

In the graphic novel, Maus I: My Father Bleeds History, a Jewish man named Artie visits his parents to collect information from his father for a graphic novel he is making about the Holocaust and the experiences that he went through and truly saw firsthand. Two questions that I have gathered that do not have complete or clear answers after the given reading are regarding why Vladek, Artie’s father, did not want his personal backstory or incidents before the Holocaust in his graphic novel, and the other being why the author of the novel chose to depict the Jews in the book as mice. Right when are introduced into the book, or even just Vladek’s story for that matter, Artie asks to talk about his life before the Holocaust even creeped into anyone’s…

“Confession of errors is like a broom which sweeps away dirt and leaves the surface brighter and cleaner,” exhorted Mahatma Gandhi. Most agree Dimmsdale should have confessed his sin with Hester, but some protest not confessing his sins saved Hester and him. Dimmsdale should have confessed his sin with Hester for three reasons: for his soul, for his mistress, and for his God. The first reason Dimmsdale should have confessed his sin with Hester concerns his soul. If Dimmsdale continued to secretly contain the truth, the pain of guilt would wretch his heart forever.…

The Greek Creation Myth, and the Roman Myth Romulus and Remus both prove the collective unconscious correct, by sharing the common theme of the sacrifice for power. In Romulus and Remus the sacrifice for power can be seen towards the end of the myth, “The brothers remained at a standstill and continued to quarrel until Romulus began to dig trenches and build walls around his hill: the Palatine Hill” (Unknown 5). In order for Romulus and Remus to stay and power, and create a city based on their own ideals they each had to ignore their family, and permanently separate themselves from each other. Then in the Greek Creation Myth Cronus and his mother attacked their father/husband, “Gaea and Cronus set up an ambush of Uranus as he lay with Gaea…

I know that I have stated this in almost every reading response I have written, but I heavily dislike the fact the author insist on using a storytelling method to talk about his subjects, including unrelated anecdotal information. I can appreciate Rob Schreiber’s intense love for music, because me too, and I think it is great he started Pitchfork out of his basement, just doing what he loves. I can relate to Schreiber because I too am in love with music but also have to work a bunch of mundane jobs to get through school. I enjoy that it is a standard rags-to-riches story. In my experience, I think I would enjoy pursuing something like that: just trying to work in what I love, even if it takes a while.…

Louis was almost too fixated to notice that Harry had sat down on his mattress opposite Louis. The green eyed lad just sat there for a moment, every now and again his mouth opening, then shutting again as if trying to spit out the words which were obviously on the tip of his tongue. “Do you want to talk about what happened? I’ve heard that talking through things makes it better, we could try that?”…

Hogwarts was Harry Potter’s Delusion: There is a theory that Harry Potter’s wonderful idealistic adventures in Hogwarts were a delusion he created for himself in reaction to the Verbal and Physical abuse. For starters, Harry's magic fantasies begin when, in real life, he's about to begin school at Stonewall High, being separated from his abusive cousin for the first time. It's a new school, a new environment, and therefore the perfect time to begin his delusions. First creation: Hagrid. Hagrid is so obviously a projection of Harry's impression of his Uncle Vernon, the only father figure in his life.…

“Maus” by Art Spiegelman is a compelling and masterful story of survival told by Art’s father, Vladek Spiegelman. A Jew that lived in Poland during World War II. Vladek’s accounts are recorded and published in an odd manner. Instead of the traditional biography of a Holocaust survivor, like the Elle Wiesel’s “Night,” “Maus” was made into a comic book. Not only was “Maus” a comic book, but the characters are rendered very uniquely.…

In a way, the sorting hat can also be viewed as the scorer for a test such as the Big Five personality inventory in Harry Potter’s world. It analyzes a person’s traits, qualities, motivations, and inner strengths while it sits on one of the student’s heads mirroring the way the Big Five test scores a person’s answers in reverse and then totaling them to give an objective rating of where they measure on each scale of the five dimensions (Meyer).…
