Each generation envisions itself to be further intellectual than the one previous, and wiser than the one that comes subsequently (Nielsen, 2013). Culture, background, religion and generation all play apart in how we see and do things. Some patient likes to be referred to as Mr. Last name and other accept being called by their first name. It is a difficult line to walk trying to figure out what is acceptable by your patients and actions they may offend them. The easiest way to avoid confrontation is to turn directly to the source and communicate with them their presence. A situation that has arose occurred when a Jehovah’s witnesses needed a blood transfusion to save his life and refused. It was difficult to accept that a patient would refuse something so simple to save their life. Although I didn’t not agree with their decision; I respected it and did not push my beliefs on to them. Caring for patients from different background can be eye opening and education experience but we must remember that everyone needs to show respect and dignity.
