Remembering Reality: A Narrative Fiction

Remembering Reality I remember the day clearer than an untouched puddle. It was nearing 10 o'clock at night, and we were standing directly in front of New York’s “Big Joe Brady’s” restaurant; our favorite restaurant. “Today’s the day,” I announced, “the West is waiting for me.”
“Bob please, you have to rethink this. I mean, going out West and expecting to automatically get wealthy? You’d have to be insane to think that's ever going to work!” Jimmy pleaded.
“Of course you don't believe me. I have a plan, Jimmy. Just believe me on this one.” His face turned into a horrible look of disappointment. “That’s it! Jimmy, why don't you just come with me? We’d never have to ruin our friendship, and we would make money while doing so.” I hinted, “what do you say?” Staring at me, Jimmy’s lips began to quiver. Quickly, he straightened his back, gave me a firm look and said, “No. Unlike you, I’d rather stay where home is. Here, in New York. Bob I’m begging you, just stay.”

The finest chap I know, thought that I wasn't capable of this. Immediately I told him to meet me there, 10 on dot, 20 years from that day. That would should him I could make it on my own. After the deal was made, we departed; or at least, I left. As I looked over my shoulder, I saw a black silhouette of a young man, staring at me as if I was an alien.
However, little did I know, 20 years from that day we would meet again, but unknowingly. Jimmy would be dressed in a police uniform, leaving him to appear unrecognizable. I would be wanted in Chicago, but Jimmy wouldn’t have the guts to arrest his old friend. He would then retrieve a plainclothesman, who would later arrest me. Jimmy was right; if i had just listened to him I would’ve never gone to jail. I would have never been stuck in that mess.
“Sir? Sir!” a voice roared angrily. I slowly lifted my head in a confused manner, to see a woman standing impatiently before

At precisely six forty-three p.m. of a late summer’s day, the residence of Maple Street go about their various evening activities— women gossiping, men tending to their vehicles, and children buying from an ice cream vendor. Clear overhead zooms something that seems out of this world. It roars across the sky but a crash is yet to be heard. In all the ruckus, the neighbors muse at what it might have been. Suddenly, all the power is wiped off the street; the phone lines are dead, the car engines are kaput, all the lights are out, and even portable radios are down.…

I couldn't agree more, sometimes I think to myself as well if I have any repressed memories that impact my personality. I never used to be so compulsive or expressive, but I think that has to do with a defense mechanism of mine. I know I have some repressed memories that have molded my personality to be more defensive at times, although I don't like that myself, I do feel it is a defense mechanism to be guarded for protection. I honestly did the same thing with the denial mechanism with my best friend during high school. I was in denial because of my friends passing just wasn't acceptable, and when people approached or confronted me, I pretended as though he was on a long vacation.…

“I can’t make anything out of your chicken scratch,” my primary teacher would upbraid me for my handwriting which visually did not fit into the guidelines and measures of a ‘perfect’ handwriting. Being the youngest in the class — which I was constantly reminded about — combined with my handwriting that was labeled ‘displeasing’ converged into a deep sense of insecurity. My C’s could be mistaken for E’s, my T’s looked like M’s, and all Russian words flowed into illegible zigzags. No effort in the world could turn my cursive into a perfectly aligned congruent font, slanted 30° to the right. Habits stay habits.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

The brain stores memories with the help of neurons which induces physical changes. The physical changes that occur are unknown; however, it is known that the perception of memories can change. The brain processes information according to the significance and the relevance of the person experiencing the occurrence. For example, the death of an ill family member may make it difficult for some to cope; nevertheless, some may believe in spiritual values and assume the ill family member is in a better place.
